The Creation Story of These Wings

SHOAL

When I made these wings, I used river rocks.

I loved the shapes they left behind on the silk. Some of them came out really clearly, while others almost disappeared into the blue and green, like stones you can see through shallow water until the light changes and suddenly you cannot see them anymore.

After I made them, I started thinking about what a shoal actually is.

A shoal forms when sand, rocks, shells, and other material carried by moving water begin to collect in one place.

The current slows down enough for things to settle.

Over time, what has gathered underneath the water becomes substantial enough to change the shape of the water itself.

I really loved that.

Because I feel like the last few years of my life have involved being carried through a lot of things very quickly.

Things changed faster than I could process them.

Work changed.

My body changed.

Where I lived changed.

My plans changed.

There were periods when I was mostly trying to keep moving through whatever was happening next.

And when you are moving that quickly, you do not always get to understand what everything is doing to you while it is happening.

You just keep going.

Eventually, things slow down enough that you can start seeing what has collected.

What stayed.

What changed you.

What got worn smooth.

What you are still carrying.

What has somehow become part of the ground underneath you.

That is what these rocks started to feel like to me.

River rocks do not begin smooth.

Water makes them that way.

They get pushed around.

They hit other rocks.

They travel.

They get buried.

They surface again.

Their shape becomes a record of everywhere they have been.

I think people are like that too.

There are things I would absolutely never have chosen to go through.

But I can also see that I am shaped differently now because I went through them.

Some things have softened.

Some things have become much clearer.

Some things I thought mattered tremendously do not matter very much anymore.

And other things I barely paid attention to before have become incredibly important.

Making art.

Being outside.

Being near water.

Moving my body in ways that actually feel good.

Having enough time to notice what is happening around me.

Letting an idea become something physical.

I think part of what I have been learning is that slowing down does not necessarily mean nothing is happening.

Sometimes slowing down is when you finally get to see what has been forming underneath everything.

A shoal can sit underneath the water almost completely invisible.

Then the tide changes.

The water pulls back.

And suddenly there is ground there.

It was already there.

You just could not see it yet.

That became the story of Shoal for me.

THE OFFERING

These wings are for someone who has been carried through a lot.

Someone whose life has changed faster than they could make sense of it.

Someone who has had to keep adapting and moving even when part of them really wanted everything to stop for a minute.

Maybe this is your minute.

Let some things settle.

You do not have to figure all of it out.

You do not have to decide what every experience meant.

You do not have to turn everything that happened to you into some beautiful lesson.

Just notice what is here now.

Notice what stayed.

Notice what became stronger.

Notice what softened.

Notice what you care about now.

Notice what you have been slowly building underneath yourself without realizing it.

When you move these wings, the rocks appear and disappear inside the folds.

Sometimes they are obvious.

Sometimes you barely see them.

Then the silk moves again and there they are.

I think parts of ourselves are like that.

Something can be there for years before we are finally in the right place to see it.

Sometimes we just need the tide to change.

So let the wings move slowly.

Let them rise.

Let them fall.

Let the blue and green move around you like water.

Let the rocks appear and disappear.

You do not need to rush toward whatever comes next.

There is already something forming here.

There is already ground underneath you.

And you may be standing on more than you realize.

These magical oceanic silk angel wings are handmade for dance, flow arts, worship, ritual, play, photography, performance and becoming your most luminous ocean self.

Each pair is created in San Diego, California using a sun print process and fresh kelp or other sea botanicals ethically harvested, composited then composted from the shores of the Pacific. I make every piece by hand with sunlight, seawater, silk, and naturally washed-ashore kelp. No two prints will ever be exactly alike.

Because I print with real fresh kelp, every order begins with a custom beach trip. Seaweed decomposes quickly, so I harvest it fresh and look for beautiful, mostly intact fronds during high tide. Then I bring it home, prepare the silk, create the exposure, rinse and process the piece, clean up the studio, and carefully pack it for its journey to you.

Each set takes roughly a day and a half of hands-on work, plus travel time, materials, cleanup, packaging, and the many small business costs behind making art sustainably. Your purchase supports an independent artist making wearable ocean magic one piece at a time.

This is a wet sun print artwork, so you may see organic marks, tonal variation, soft edges, water textures, and other beautiful creative imperfections. These are not flaws. They are part of the handmade process and the reason every silk feels alive and unique.

Please treat your silk wings with care. Keep them away from dusty or dirty environments, rough surfaces, and anything that may snag or stain the fabric.

If they get dirty wash only with non alkaline silk soap. Not detergent. Heritage is a good brand. The color will change if washed with alkaline. If the color begins to change, rinse in a solution of water and vinegar to bring back the intensity of the blue.

Printed in the USA. Currently shipped within the USA only.

If you would like, you may leave a wish, prayer, blessing, intention, or a little good juju in your order notes. I will hold it in my heart while I make your piece, in whatever way feels appropriate and comfortable to you.

Dance with them. Pray with them. Play with them. Let the ocean move through you.

SPECS

Lightweight Silk Wings
These silk wings are designed to feel airy, fluid, and responsive in motion. The lightweight fabric creates a wide, dramatic shape for dance, flow arts, ritual, worship, photography, and performance without feeling heavy in your hands.

Each set weighs approximately 60 g / 2.1 oz.

-Full wingspan: 180 cm / 70 in
-Wing length: 90 cm / 35 in

The silk is printed by hand with my original kelp cyanotype process, so the blue-and-white design shifts beautifully as the fabric moves through light.

Flexible, Travel-Friendly Rods
Each set comes with lightweight fiberglass rods that are strong, flexible, and easy to carry. The rods detach for packing and travel, then assemble quickly when you are ready to dance.

Thoughtful Construction
The silk sleeves that hold the rods are reinforced in the areas that receive the most movement and pressure. Strong stitching and finished edges help the wings hold up through regular use while reducing fraying.

Because every pair is individually printed with real kelp and sunlight, variations in print placement, water texture, blue tone, and organic markings are part of the one-of-a-kind artwork.

Care Instructions
Gently steam before use to release wrinkles and help the silk move freely.

Only wash with detergent free silk laundry soap. Handwash. Little leftovers of detergent in washing machine can brown cyanotype print. Keep away from alkaline sprays etc. Keep the wings away from water, humidity, rain, wet sand, dusty environments, and damp storage. Store them completely dry in a protective bag between uses.

These are delicate silk artworks made for movement. Handle them with care, and they will remain beautiful for many dances.
