Outer Shoal | River Rock, Macrocystis pyrifera, Egregia Menziesii
The Creation Story of These Wings
OUTER SHOAL
This pair felt like it belonged just past the river mouth.
Still carrying the river.
Already beginning to become ocean.
When I made these wings, the main forms came from river rocks, but there was also a trace of kelp in them. That combination felt important to me. It was not fully one thing or the other. It felt like a threshold. A place where fresh water has traveled as far as it can, and the ocean is beginning to take over.
That is what made Outer Shoal feel like the right name.
I love places like that in nature.
Edges.
Meeting points.
The places where one ecosystem turns into another and you can feel both at once.
The mouth of a river.
The line where sand changes.
The place where stones are still being carried down from inland, but the tides, salt, seaweed, and ocean currents are starting to leave their mark too.
That feels like a real place in life as well.
There have been so many moments in the last few years where I have felt like I was between worlds.
No longer where I used to be.
Not fully arrived somewhere new.
Still carrying pieces of an old life.
Already being shaped by a new one.
I think a lot of healing is like that.
A lot of reinvention is like that too.
You do not suddenly wake up as some fully transformed person.
Usually, you are in the in-between for a while.
Still holding remnants of what came before.
Still carrying the stones.
And at the same time, something new starts appearing.
A different pace.
A different landscape.
A different relationship to your body.
A different vision for what beauty or work or movement or home might even mean.
That is what I felt in these wings.
The river rocks made me think about everything that has been carried a long distance.
Everything that has already traveled through pressure, movement, time, and change.
The kelp made me think about the first signs of the ocean.
The first signs of another kind of life beginning.
A different rhythm.
Something more fluid.
Something that moves with the tide.
Something that knows how to bend.
That combination felt really personal to me.
Because I do not feel like I am standing at the beginning of something with empty hands.
I feel like I arrived here carrying a lot.
Experiences.
Losses.
Skills.
Grief.
Beauty.
Fatigue.
Knowledge.
Questions.
And somehow all of it comes with me into whatever is next.
That is part of what I love about this piece.
It does not erase the river.
It does not rush straight into the open ocean either.
It holds the meeting point.
It lets both things be present.
That became the story of Outer Shoal for me.
A place of transition.
A place where what has carried you this far is still with you.
A place where the next landscape is already beginning to appear.
THE OFFERING
These wings are for someone who is in between.
Someone standing at the edge of one chapter and the beginning of another.
Someone who knows life is changing, even if the shape of what comes next is not fully clear yet.
Someone who is still carrying the past, and also starting to feel the pull of something new.
If that is where you are, these wings are for you.
You do not need to have completed the transition.
You do not need to have figured everything out.
You do not need to become a brand new person in order to move forward.
You are allowed to be at the threshold.
You are allowed to be made of many landscapes at once.
You are allowed to carry what the river gave you.
You are allowed to let the ocean change you too.
When you move with these wings, I hope you can feel that meeting point.
The groundedness of the stones.
The fluidity of the water.
The first hint of kelp.
The sense that something is shifting.
Open them slowly.
Let the silk spread wide.
Turn and let the colors move.
Let the rocks appear through the folds.
Let the kelp flicker through like a signal from farther out.
Let yourself feel what it is like to stand in a place that is becoming something else.
There is so much power in that kind of place.
So much uncertainty too.
And still, it is a real place.
A place you can inhabit.
A place you can create from.
A place you can move from.
You do not have to rush out of the in-between.
There may be wisdom here.
There may be beauty here.
There may be a version of yourself taking shape here that could not have emerged any other way.
So if you are standing at the edge of something, let these wings remind you that edges are fertile places.
Where river meets ocean.
Where old life meets new life.
Where what carried you here meets what will carry you next.
You are allowed to be in transition.
You are allowed to keep becoming.
You are allowed to meet the next tide with all that you have brought with you.
___________
These magical oceanic silk angel wings are handmade for dance, flow arts, worship, ritual, play, photography, performance and becoming your most luminous ocean self.
Each pair is created in San Diego, California using a sun print process and fresh kelp or other sea botanicals ethically harvested, composited then composted from the shores of the Pacific. I make every piece by hand with sunlight, seawater, silk, and naturally washed-ashore kelp. No two prints will ever be exactly alike.
Because I print with real fresh kelp, every order begins with a custom beach trip. Seaweed decomposes quickly, so I harvest it fresh and look for beautiful, mostly intact fronds during high tide. Then I bring it home, prepare the silk, create the exposure, rinse and process the piece, clean up the studio, and carefully pack it for its journey to you.
Each set takes roughly a day and a half of hands-on work, plus travel time, materials, cleanup, packaging, and the many small business costs behind making art sustainably. Your purchase supports an independent artist making wearable ocean magic one piece at a time.
This is a wet sun print artwork, so you may see organic marks, tonal variation, soft edges, water textures, and other beautiful creative imperfections. These are not flaws. They are part of the handmade process and the reason every silk feels alive and unique.
Please treat your silk wings with care. Keep them away from dusty or dirty environments, rough surfaces, and anything that may snag or stain the fabric.
If they get dirty wash only with non alkaline silk soap. Not detergent. Heritage is a good brand. The color will change if washed with alkaline. If the color begins to change, rinse in a solution of water and vinegar to bring back the intensity of the blue.
Printed in the USA. Currently shipped within the USA only.
If you would like, you may leave a wish, prayer, blessing, intention, or a little good juju in your order notes. I will hold it in my heart while I make your piece, in whatever way feels appropriate and comfortable to you.
Dance with them. Pray with them. Play with them. Let the ocean move through you.

SPECS
Lightweight Silk Wings
These silk wings are designed to feel airy, fluid, and responsive in motion. The lightweight fabric creates a wide, dramatic shape for dance, flow arts, ritual, worship, photography, and performance without feeling heavy in your hands.
Each set weighs approximately 60 g / 2.1 oz.
-Full wingspan: 180 cm / 70 in
-Wing length: 90 cm / 35 in
The silk is printed by hand with my original kelp cyanotype process, so the blue-and-white design shifts beautifully as the fabric moves through light.
Flexible, Travel-Friendly Rods
Each set comes with lightweight fiberglass rods that are strong, flexible, and easy to carry. The rods detach for packing and travel, then assemble quickly when you are ready to dance.
Thoughtful Construction
The silk sleeves that hold the rods are reinforced in the areas that receive the most movement and pressure. Strong stitching and finished edges help the wings hold up through regular use while reducing fraying.
Because every pair is individually printed with real kelp and sunlight, variations in print placement, water texture, blue tone, and organic markings are part of the one-of-a-kind artwork.
Care Instructions
Gently steam before use to release wrinkles and help the silk move freely.
Only wash with detergent free silk laundry soap. Handwash. Little leftovers of detergent in washing machine can brown cyanotype print. Keep away from alkaline sprays etc. Keep the wings away from water, humidity, rain, wet sand, dusty environments, and damp storage. Store them completely dry in a protective bag between uses.
These are delicate silk artworks made for movement. Handle them with care, and they will remain beautiful for many dances.
