Sunlit Canopy | Pacific Kelp Forest | 45 x 144"
This one-of-a-kind oversized silk veil is a portrait of the Southern California kelp forest, created from real ocean botanicals, sunlight, and hand-carved printmaking.
Measuring an expansive 45" × 144", the veil is sun printed with Feather Boa Kelp, Giant Kelp, Bull Kelp, and bladderwrack, preserving the sweeping blades, branching forms, air bladders, ruffled edges, and intricate structures of the actual specimens across twelve feet of sheer silk.
Swimming through the botanical composition are Garibaldi fish printed from original linocut stamps that I carved by hand, bringing the brilliant, iconic inhabitants of California’s kelp forests into the piece.
The ultra-light 5mm silk is exceptionally sheer and fluid. In motion, the long veil billows, spirals, trails, and folds back over itself, allowing the layers of kelp and fish to continually appear and disappear through the translucent fabric.
Each ocean botanical is individually gathered, arranged directly onto the silk, and exposed to sunlight through the cyanotype process. The resulting print records the individual contours and textures of each specimen. The Garibaldi are then added from my hand-carved blocks, combining botanical contact printing with traditional relief printmaking.
Because the artwork is made from actual natural specimens and printed individually by hand, this composition cannot be exactly reproduced.
