SEA GARDEN

Extra-Long Ocean Botanical Mermaid Fans

Creation Story

Sea Garden was inspired by the experience of moving through a living kelp forest, surrounded by shifting layers of seaweed green, turquoise water, deep Prussian blue, and flashes of amber and chartreuse where sunlight passes through the kelp.

Kelp changes dramatically underwater. Earthy greens and browns become luminous beneath the surface, glowing amber, gold, chartreuse, and olive against the surrounding blue water.

I wanted these fans to capture that transformation.

Deep seaweed greens and Prussian blue move into turquoise, while amber and chartreuse emerge through the botanical forms like kelp suddenly illuminated beneath the surface.

The extraordinary length of the silk allows the composition to continually transform in motion. One moment turquoise water dominates. The next, amber kelp flashes through the folds. Then everything disappears into deep green again.

When the fans open, trail, turn, and spiral, the silk becomes its own moving ocean environment.

Sea Garden is my interpretation of swimming through a living kelp forest, translated into silk and movement.

Offering

Sea Garden is an offering to the hidden world beneath the surface.

To the forests that sway in green light. To the amber glow of kelp touched by sun. To the currents we cannot see, yet still feel moving through us.

These fans invite you to enter that threshold where movement becomes ritual and the body becomes part of the tide.

An offering for surrender, transformation, intuition, and return.

For remembering that the ocean is more than something we look at from the shore. Sometimes we are meant to enter it, disappear into its mystery, and let it change us.

Description

Sea Garden is a one-of-a-kind pair of extra-long Mermaid Fans created with real botanical seaweed imagery on silk.

The palette moves through deep seaweed green, Prussian blue, luminous turquoise, chartreuse, and warm amber inspired by kelp glowing beneath sunlight.

Each fan stretches approximately 71 inches from the base of the handle to the end of the silk. The 12-inch bamboo staves are decorated in aqua green, carrying the ocean palette from the silk all the way into the structure of the fans.

Their dramatic length creates expansive, fluid movement around the body. The silk can trail behind you, sweep across the floor, spiral through turns, float overhead, or open into enormous waves of color.

As the silk moves, the botanical composition continually changes. Turquoise becomes open water. Amber kelp flashes through the folds. Chartreuse glows against deeper greens. Prussian blue moves in and out of shadow.

The result feels less like carrying a prop and more like moving inside an underwater landscape.

Sea Garden was created for dancers, flow artists, mermaids, performers, photographers, and anyone who has ever wanted to disappear into the kelp forest for a while.

Movement

Sea Garden was made to come alive in motion.

Slow movement allows the silk to float, hover, and reveal the botanical imagery in layers. Turns send the long silk outward into sweeping circles and spirals. Larger movements create broad waves of color that surround the body.

Because these fans are extra long, they need more space than shorter fan veils. Give yourself plenty of room to explore them so the silk can fully open, trail, and move without catching on surrounding objects.

The adjustable screw-rivet pivots allow you to control how freely the fans open and close.

Care

These Mermaid Fans are made with lightweight silk and should be handled gently, especially along the edges of the fabric and where the silk attaches to the bamboo staves.

Store completely dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight. Avoid leaving the silk tightly crumpled for extended periods. For longer storage, loosely fold or roll the silk.

If washing becomes necessary, gently hand wash the silk in cool water using cyanotype-safe soap only.

Do not use conventional laundry detergent, alkaline soap, bleach, stain removers, fabric softener, or other household cleaning products, as they may alter or fade the botanical print.

Do not scrub, twist, or wring the silk.

Rinse gently in cool water and allow it to air dry naturally. Keep the bamboo staves and metal hardware as dry as possible while cleaning.

If the silk becomes wrinkled, carefully steam it on a low setting, keeping the steamer moving rather than concentrating heat in one area.

Avoid dragging the silk across rough pavement or allowing it to catch on branches, Velcro, jewelry, or other abrasive surfaces.

Periodically check the screw-rivet pivots before use and adjust them as needed.

One of a Kind

Sea Garden is created with real botanical forms rather than a digitally repeated pattern.

The placement of the seaweed, the interaction between the botanicals and sunlight, and the layers of hand-applied color make the final composition impossible to reproduce exactly.

Each movement rearranges that composition again, turning the silk into a constantly changing underwater garden.
